On 17 June 2009 Congressmen Jim Moran (D-VA), Lee Terry (R-NE) and Frank Wolf (R-VA) introduced H.R. 2906, the Comprehensive Problem Gambling Act to the U.S. House of Representatives. The Comprehensive Problem Gambling Act is the first ever federal initiative proposed to prevent gambling addiction and to deal with the fallout from those who have become addicted to gambling.
According to the bill, $71 million would be allocated over 5 years to state health agencies, tribes, universities and non-profits to help prevent gambling addictions, fund treatments for problem gamblers and for research into the prevention of the problem itself.
Keith Whyte, the Executive Director of the National Council on Problem Gambling is obviously backing the Bill. He says of the issue; “Problem gambling is a serious public health issue that has been overlooked by the federal government for far too long. We know that it is both preventable and treatable, and this bill will help ensure that all Americans will have access to these services.”
