There’s not been much news filtering through yet about the recently implemented outlawing of casinos and slot machine halls in Russia.
On Tuesday night at midnight, the new law, set in motion by Putin back in 2006, came into being. Roulette tables spun their last spin and the casino and slot machine hall doors shut for good, (or at least a week or so). Moscow reported that after midnight on Tuesday (which was obviously officially 1 July 2009) around 513 gaming venues around the capital city had closed, 29 of which were casinos.
It is presumed that after a week or so of pseudo-enforcement by the authorities, acting out committment to the new law, the hype will die down. Casinos and gaming establishments will then most probably open once again under the cover of being a “poker club” (which are still legal, because poker is considered as and categorised as a “sport” ), or maybe via some form of structured, off-the-radar, contribution system to the personal finances of policing authorities…!
What is sure at this stage, is that the government will be set to loose around $2 billion in taxes as a result of the implementation of the new law banning gambling and that somewhere between 350,000 and 500,000 people are set to be put out of work. Despite, according to the new law, gambling being legal in one of the four designated “gambling zones” around the Russian Federation, none of these “zones” is ready to take bets yet, because none of the gambling establishments there have even started to be built yet.
We’ll keep you posted as soon as any more news comes through.
