Figures released by the Victorian government have revealed that Victorians have spent $611 per person on pokies in the last year.
Overall, a total of $2.7 billion has been spent by Victorians in the last financial year according to an article published in the Sydney Morning Herald.
The figures which are published by the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation (VCGR) have alarmed many industry analysts given the fact that the Australian economy has been suffering from rising cost of living and interest rates.
Other figures released in the report show that the number of pokie games in Victoria is at it’s lowest level since the 1990’s. In total there are now close to 27,000 pokie machines in Victoria.
The report also highlights the Victorian suburbs where pokie playing is at its highest. These include Brimbank, Monash and Casey.
Critics and the Australian anti-gambling lobby have been quick to point out that of the $2.6 billion of pokie revenue generated in the last financial year close to $1 billion in gambling taxes would have been collected by the Victorian government.
