A security breach at a newly launched online casino run by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) saw the site taken off line after players found themselves able to access and gamble with funds from other players accounts.
The security breach happened last Thursday at PlayNow.com, the first government sanctioned online casino site in North America which offers casino games such as online pokies to players. One informed of the problems the reaction from the BCLC was swift, and the site was taken offline.
Initial reports indicated that the site had to be taken off line on its launch day because it couldn’t cope with the traffic that had been generated. However, it quickly became apparent there were more pressing issues at hand and that there were some concerns with the security of the new site. According to reports emanating from BCLC the technical issue that caused the problems was a “data crossover”.
The result of the breach was that up to 134 player accounts were compromised and over $8000 of funds had to be reimbursed to players.
Commenting on the security breach, Michael Graydon the CEO of the BCLC stated…
“We reacted very quickly and in a transparent way…”
However, industry analysts are surprised that issues were not picked up in the ’soft’ launch of the PlayNow.com casino site, which is run on the OpenBet platform.
