Norway’s online gaming ban challenged by EFTA

Norway has not been a big fan of online gaming for a while now.  Recently though, it has been pushing through some tight legislation to try to put a stop to any financial transactions to all gaming companies except for the state run monopoly.  Yes, you have heard of something similar before… putting a stop to the actions of the middle man in the online gaming process, ringing any UIGEA bells?  These new measures have already been approved by the Norwegian Parliament and are set to go into play by August.

Norwegian politicians are coming up against stiff opposition however, in the form of the European Free Trade Association’s Surveillance Authority.  The EFTA is made up of 4 member countries; Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Lichtenstein.  According to them, these new laws would breach the EFTA’s internal market freedoms; freedom of the movement of trade, services and capital throughout the EU and EFTA.

The opposition to Norway’s prospective rulings put forward by the EFTA are greatly similar to the arguments put forward by the WTO on behalf of the EU, Costa Rica and Antigua against the US’s version of the anti-online gaming UIGEA law; essentially that it is a violation of fair trade agreements.
