News and World Report publishes online gaming argument

On 1 June 2009 the leading news  publication, US News and World Report, brought the online gambling debate to the masses by publishing editorials written by the two protagonists of todays US online gambling saga.

There are two principal characters in American politics currently vocally spearheading the arguments for and against the legalisation of online gambling.  On the pro side; there is Barney Frank, House Financial Services Committee Chairman and a Massachusetts Democrat.  Frank introduced the new H.R. 2267 Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act on 6 May 2009, to repeal UIGEA and replace it with a federal framework allowing internet gambling (still subject to jurisdictional regulations).  On the con / pro-UIGEA side is Spencer Bachus, a Republican from Alabama and ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee.

Frank’s argument revolves around his basic principle; “there is one major reason that leads me to oppose the ban on Internet gambling: It is an activity that adult Americans enjoy and that does no conceivable harm to anybody else”.  Whereas Bachus takes the view that UIGEA is working and has reduced the weekly use of the Internet for gambling among college-age youth from 5.8 percent to 1.5 percent between 2006 and 2007.  He very much bases his argument for not repealing UIGEA on the need to protect people from the dangers and addictions of online gambling (tantamount to saying that they need protecting from themselves)…(Big Brother anyone?)!

It looks like the online gambling debate for all forms of online gaming is picking up again and opinion may soon swing in the favour of the ever-devoted-to-the-gaming-cause Barney Frank
