The trend of land based gaming companies entering the online sector continued today when the Chicago based slot machine manufacturer WMS Gaming announced that it planned to launch an online gaming business during 2010.
Initially the company will target the UK market before moving into France, Spain and Italy, though they have indicated that they will target further geographical expansion pending the developments in local gambling legislation. Currently WMS are licensed to sell gambling machines in close to 300 separate countries globally.
Commenting on the move, industry analyst Jamie Spence stated:
“It’s not immediately clear how WMS are going to compete in the UK market, which most analysts would say is both saturated and mature. What is clear is that this marks a significant development in the competitive landscape of the online gaming software sector as historically land based gaming giants have stayed well clear of the online environment.
From a players perspective, having such an experienced an innovative gaming manufacturer entering the online arena can only ultimately mean better more innovative games. It’s an exciting move particularly from an American based company.”
