Rumours we are hearing from down under indicate that Australia may have its own Las Vegas in their own back yard. The idea has recently been promoted by Aidan McLindon, an Independant Queensland MP, and the concept has created some controversy in the Sunshine State, particularly amongst those opposed to gambling and it’s online variant known as online pokies.
McLindin is promoting the concept of an Australian gambling mecca in Cairns in the beief that it would have a beneficial effect by revolutionising Australia’s gambling industry as well as providing a significant long term boost to the tourist industry in Northern Queensland. He has been quick to also point out that if such a concept gets off the ground, it could potentially solve the long term unemployement issue currently facing the region.
McLindon’s concept was presented in Brisbane at the recent Tourism Futures Conference and it has caused a certain amount of controversy in the press.
Speaking out against the concept has been the Mayor of Cairns, who has been quick to state that the concept of an Australin style Las Vegas in Cairns is not something that residents of the area would necessarily like to see. Comments in the press have even gone as far to say the concept is “bizarre”.
However, the concept of an Aus Vegas appears to getting support from some sections of Australia’s anti-gambling lobby, who believe that it could actually help problem gambling, particularly if it resulted in moving pokie games and other gambling machines away from out of town locations and into a centralised gambling mecca.
